Soup jars are a heartwarming and filling holiday gift.

Everyone loves to eat and food can be a great gift. A soup jar is a easy and inexpensive way to show someone you care. All you need is a mason jar, dry ingredients and some decoration. These also make great host or hostess gifts for all of those holiday parties that you attend this time of year. Below is a recipe we like for curried lentil soup.

2 teaspoons dried onion
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon thyme
cayenne pepper to taste (usually a pinch will do)
1 tablespoon curry powder
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1 cup red lentils
1 cup green lentils

To make your jars, simply layer the ingredients in a one quart mason jar. The order in which you layer is not important since all the ingredients get poured into the pot all at once. As long as you think it looks pretty, then that is all that matters. The great thing about soup is that it is so hard to get it wrong! For example, we are big onion fans so we increased the amount of dried onion we put in our mix.

On your tag include cooking directions. For our curry lentil soup:
Bring 4 cups of water, 2 cups of vegetable broth and 1 can of tomatoes to a boil. Add the dry mix and reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for about 20-30 minutes. Add salt and paper to taste.
